Japanese Dominance Continues at Tampa Pro 2025 as Sora Shirai Takes the Crown
April 5th 2025
The 31st edition of Tampa Pro delivered another statement performance from Japan's elite street skaters, with Sora Shirai claiming top honors through a flawless run capped off by a picture-perfect cab kickflip to backside lipslide. The young ripper's technical prowess and consistency proved just enough to edge out some serious competition.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Yuto Horigome came tantalizingly close to his third consecutive Tampa Pro victory, settling for second place by just a handful of points. Meanwhile, Kairi Netsuke narrowly missed completing a Japanese podium sweep, landing in fourth position and showing that the depth of talent coming out of Japan runs deep.

Rising Talent and Record Breakers
Peru's Angelo Caro announced his arrival on the big stage with a third-place finish and a win in the Independent Best Trick contest, throwing down a flawless tre flip to noseblunt that had everyone talking. His standout performance earned him an invitation to the SLS Santa Monica Wildcard Jam on May 23rd—a well-deserved opportunity for the South American shredder.
Brazilian veteran Kelvin Hoefler made history by reaching his eleventh consecutive Tampa Pro final, finishing eighth this year. The 30-year-old's streak, dating back to his debut in 2015, showcases remarkable consistency in one of skateboarding's most competitive arenas. Eyebrows were raised, however, when Hoefler appeared in Skechers gear despite his long-standing association with vegan footwear brand Cariuma, sparking speculation about potential sponsor changes.

The Japanese Wave
This isn't a fluke—it's a trend. Last year's Tampa Am saw six of twelve finalists hailing from Japan, foreshadowing the current professional landscape. Their technical precision, trick selection originality, and execution consistency continue setting new standards worldwide, establishing Japan as skateboarding's current powerhouse.
Notable absences included American heavy-hitters Nyjah Huston and Jagger Eaton, though their no-shows likely didn't change the outcome. Canadian Ryan Decenzo also sat this one out for the best possible reason, welcoming daughter Mia Giuliana into the world on April 4th alongside his wife.
